Limnobium Laevigatum | Smooth Frogbit
Smooth Frogbit, Limnobium laevigatum, has shiny green foliage filled with spongy tissue for buoyancy. Juvenile smooth frogbit plants are formed on the ends of runners. The roots of Limnobium Laevigatum make excellent cover for fry and lower nitrates, helping to prevent algae growth in your pond.
Limnobium Laevigatum, smooth frogbit, is not a native plant and is not very hardy, so remove decaying plants after first frost. To overwinter smooth frogbit, place in a container with shallow water and a little soil for the roots to grow into. Keep in good light, and at a temperature of above 10 °c. Return to the pond late spring (April/May) when there is no risk of frost.
Where do you plant floating pond plants?
It is recommended that 3-5 small floating plants like Limnobium Laevigatum - Smooth Frogbit are added to your pond per 1m² (metre squared) of water. This allows for growth and spread of the growing pond plant, and gives it the necessary space to establish. Simply place your floating pond plant on the surface of your water, and leave it to float. Most floating pond plants prefer still or slow-moving water, and will follow water currents to a natural position. Avoid placing near fast-flowing filters or outlets, otherwise the floating pond plant will congregate around the filter.
